Day 21 - Spatial Memory in UX Design

Spatial Memory

Spatial memory is the ability to learn the location of objects of interest by interacting with them repeatedly.

In GUIs, it helps users develop a level of automaticity (without occupying the mind with low-level details) when accessing features that are often used.

Two things that ensure that users develop spatial memory are:

  • Stable UIs where the elements stay where they are

  • Repeated use of the interface

Spatial Memory in use

A macOS user will look for the close(X) button on the top left-hand side of the screen while the Windows or PC user will look for the close(X) button on the right hand of the screen.
